Our first flight from Melbourne to Doha, left on time at 10:55pm, flying with Qatar Airways, it was a pretty good flight, although very full. We did not get a row to ourselves, like we hoped, but that was okay, thankfully I sat on the aisle which allowed me to drink plenty of fluids and get up to stretch as often as possible. This leg was 14 hours, so I stayed awake as long as I could to try and get into the European time zone, I watched 2 movies, Breakfast Club and Eat, Pray and Love. I managed to stay awake until about 3:30am and then slept off and on until around 10:30am. The hostesses went past a lot with drinks and even snacks at one stage, very attentive if required. Pete slept very well.
We arrived on time into Doha, Qatar. We only had a very short stop which was unfortunate as it is a new airport and we love looking around an airport! The next flight was a 6hr journey, thankfully though we made up a bit of time and landed after 5 and a half hours. It was only a small plane, Airbus 320, I was a little annoyed as my seat did not recline! I did sleep a little bit, but given we were already in the European time zone, it was probably good to stay awake.
We had 3 hours to kill at Zagreb airport, hmmmm, it was smaller than our local airport Avalon! So we had a beer, used some free wifi and just sat about, killing time. It was raining at this stage and getting on and off the plane we were ferried by bus on the Tarmac, we got a little wet getting on our next flight.
Our flight took off a little late at 3:10pm, it was scheduled for 2:55pm, but it was a short flight to Sarajevo, only 50mins. It was a tiny plane where you can see the propellers, I hate these type of planes, and well done to me, I selected the seat right on the window where you can see the propeller! Yuk! We had a smooth landing in the wet! It was pouring!
Thankfully our bags were on the carousel, gladly they made the two connections, all be it, completely soaked from the rain in Zagreb! From the airport we were picked up by a driver from the hotel and had a quick trip into Sarajevo. We passed building on the way still splattered with gun shot holes from the war.
Our hotel is small, Old Town Hotel, right in the centre of the old town! It is nice and seems like it will be comfortable. We unpacked our bags and about half my clothes were wet in some parts, Pete's were a bit drier thankfully. So the room looks like a Chinese laundry with clothes hanging around drying. My back pack is empty, also drying!
After showers, we headed out for a walk, but not for long as it was pouring rain! Think we will need to buy umbrellas, the rain coats don't quite cut it! We found a lovely little bar, La Cava Bar, and had a couple of beers and then a couple of merlots, both very nice, all for the cost of $17! The guy in the bar was very friendly asking us where we were from and having a chat to us.
We wandered for a little bit through the old town, it seems very nice here, heavy Turkish influence. There is. Big mosque right by our hotel, which we have a lovely view of. It's very pretty.
For dinner we found a nice cosy restaurant, and enjoyed a tasty salad and some cevapi, they were delicious! But this stage we were feeling it quite tired, but not too bad, it was 9pm local time and time for us to go to bed.
I tried to write my blog in bed, but fell asleep typing! So I've written this post this morning after a good nights sleep, I think at this stage we have adjusted to the time zone well. We will see if we are tired tonight!
Well for now, that is day 1. I'll post some pics too.
