Exploring Bavaria

We had set aside today to do a bit of day tripping from Nuremberg and decided to visit a few little towns that are located not far from Nuremberg.

Again, we both slept like a log and woke up feeling refreshed. We visited Aldi before setting off and bought some yoghurt to have with our bananas that we bought yesterday, a good cheap breakfast which got us going for the day.

The places we selected to visit were Bamberg, Forcheim and Furth, all on the same metro line, so we purchased a day ticket for the both of us which cost €18.00 and enabled us to hop on and off the metro as we wanted.

First stop was Bamberg, around a 50 minute train ride from Nuremberg, it was very easy to reach by train and once again the German trains were super efficient. We walked from Bamberg station to the old town area, around a 20 minute walk, very easy and we'll sign posted. Luckily at this point in time it was quite sunny and even a little bit of blue sky, so when we got to the old town, the major sight being the old Rathaus (town hall) was basqued in sunlight, as if waiting for us so we could snap away on our cameras. Also we were lucky to be there before the large crowds, so we got some great pics!

From the Rathaus we walked through the old town admiring the beauty of this quaint little spot, it is simply gorgeous. We headed up to the church where we were greeted by a big grey cloud, which soon turned into a big shower! Thankfully we had our new umbrellas so kept walking and soon the showers stopped and the sun came out again.

We spent a little more time walking back down to the river and enjoyed watching a man feed some swans in the river, including some cute baby ones! We also enjoyed looking at the houses situated on the canal which had the most beautiful gardens, not to mention the houses themselves, although some looked a little crooked as if they may soon collapse.

After a long time spent exploring we decided it was time to move to the next town, so walked back to the station and caught the train to Forcheim. It was a lot smaller here than Bamberg, so only a short walk from the station and were in the down town area. Again, it's a typical German town, so very pretty. My big excitement in Forcheim was finding a public toilet that was actually free. I'm not sure I've mentioned how annoyed I get having to pay to use the loo! So it was like winning the lotto finding a free toilet, not to mention a clean free toilet! So exciting!

The sun was out in Forcheim, so again, perfect for photos, that was not to last though as the big grey cloud seemed to have followed us and sure enough, along came the rain. Lucky for us we were feeling a bit hungry so took refuge in a cafe where we ate a sandwich whilst waiting for the rain to clear. It soon eased up and we decided to move on to our final stop, Furth.

We caught the train to Furth and arrived at around 2:15pm, it's quite suburban in Furth as it is really just on the outskirts of Nuremberg. But still. There is a lovel old town and we took a few pictures before taking a wander through the shopping district where Pete found a football shop for the local team, he bought himself a nice football scarf which is sometching he collects.

To get back to Nuremberg, we caught the local metro which was also included on our day pass ticket. When we got back to Nuremberg we decided to stop for a beer before heading back to the hotel. We both enjoyed a pint and then had a chat with another Australian couple also in the bar.

After drinks we went back to the room to get ready for dinner. The sun was out in Nuremberg when we got back and we even saw a little bit of blue sky, but this was not to last and before heading out to dinner the rain started again! Man, we are getting a bit over this!

Luckily we'd decided to go to a place not far from the hotel, we enjoyed schnitzels tonight, which were okay, but certainly not meal of the trip.

It has been a lovely day visiting all the little towns that we went to. I especially loved Bamberg, it was so pretty and quaint. I really loved the baby swans!

Tomorrow we head to Wurzberg, another small town and we will also try and see some more sights spurned Nuremberg in the afternoon.

Until then folks, take care and enjoy your Wednesday!
