Finally, some sunshine!

Wednesday was another day trip day, so we got up around 7:30am, so we could head off early to beat the crowds again.

We had our usual banana and yoghurt for breakfast and then made our way to the station. We bought ourselves a Bavaria ticket which costs €28 and entitles you to travel on all trains within Bavaria, or so I thought!

We boarded the train, a nice big fast looking train that was heading to Wurzburg, a town in Bavaria and then onto Franfurt and Düsseldorf. I sort of got a little nervous when I saw the conductor as I all of a sudden thought, maybe these fast trains are not included in our bargain ticket! Sure enough, my gut instinct was correct, however, lucky for us, the conductor was very nice and explained the use of the ticket and let us carry on. He could hardly throw us off as we were getting off at the first stop. It was very nice of him and we learnt our lesson!

We arrived into Wurzburg just before 10:00am and took the short walk to the city centre. We had no trouble finding the main sights to see, and we came across more cute German buildings and lovely ornate churches. Wurzburgs most famous feature is its bridge, it is actually much like the Charles Bridge in Prague, we took loads of photos and then made our way up to the castle to take a look around and soak up the amazing views. It was a very impressive castle!

From the castle we walked back down to see a little more of the old town, it was bustling with other tourists in large groups and we started to suffer from tourist rage, so decided given we'd seen a lot of the sights,  it was time to head off after buying a sandwich for lunch. We caught the 12:42 train back to Nuremberg arriving back just before 2pm.

It was lucky we did head back early as we ended up having a very full afternoon visiting the next place on our agenda, which was the Nuremberg rally grounds, a large area on the outskirts of Nuremberg where the Nazi party held rallies in the lead up to the war. There was a fantastic museum that we visited which gave a very good insight into the history of the rally grounds and how they came to be built. We spent nearly an hour at the museum, they had audio guides to use which allowed you to understand each of the displays, certainly very helpful and a museum I'd highly recommend if anyone is visiting Nuremberg.

After the museum, we walked over to what was known as the Zeppelin field, this houses a large grand stand type structure and was where Hitler would stand to lead the rallies. We stood up on the grandstand and you could imagine the power he must have felt looking out over the grounds filled with his followers. A lot of history, and hard not to also feel saddened by what this lead to.

By this time we had walked what seemed like a million miles, it was starting to get sunny (we had no rain today!) and we had spotted a beer garden on our way to the museum, so decided to stop in for a beer. It was so pleasant and the sky was now blue! So exciting after our days of rain! We ended up sitting in the sun and having 2 beers before catching the S-Bahn back into the city centre. It was such a great afternoon!

It was almost 7pm by now and we were getting a little hungry, so we walked over to the old town and found a nice little restaurant to eat at. We both had goulash with bread dumplings, yummy, served eight a side of sauerkraut! It was delicious!

After dinner we took a slow walk back to the hotel, it was such a nice evening we ended up buying an ice cream and sitting on the bridge enjoying the sounds of buskers playing music and the pleasant warmth, just perfect!

But all good things must end, we were both very tired and headed back to the hotel to sleep!

What a lovely day we had! Tomorrow we head to Munich, our last stop! We have 4 nights there before flying home on Monday night. We both can't wait to be in Munich as it is one of our favourite cities!

Stay tuned for more blog updates, no doubt there will be a lot more visits to beer gardens over the next few days, as long as the sun stays out!

Cheerio :-)
