Day 1 in Dubrovnik

We woke this morning to a glorious day, so headed to the old city for a walk around before finding a nice vantage point to take some photos of the old town from a distance. The water here is a beautiful turquoise colour and with the old town in the background, it makes for some great photos.

After grabbing a small bight to eat from a local bakery, we headed up and walked the city walls. The views over the roof tops from the walls makes the stair climbing so worthwhile, it's a sight to see. It was a lot busier walking the walls than it was in 2002, I feel, like back then we were the only people on the wall, today it was packed with tour groups all trying to get a good photo.

After walking the walls we took some more photos in the old town, but then decided to go for a bit of a walk outside the old town as the hoards of cruise ship people with the zimmer frames were descending on the city. I'm not sure how some of these ancient looking people would manage to get around all the stairs in the old city, it was simply crazy!

Following our walk we headed back to the apartment for some lunch, we grabbed some bread from a local bakery and some supplies from the supermarket, just like old times! It was nice, and we enjoyed a couple of beers left by Gordana our host.

It was late after noon by this time and time for much deserved beer and wine, so back to the old town where the cross had dispersed and it was a lot easier to get around. We went to a nice bar on the main square and sat outside people watching and laughing at cute dogs.

We had a late dinner at around 9pm, funny how you eat late when on holidays! Tonight we decided on Lasagna, it was so yummy and cheesy.  Food options are not super varied here and there is a lot of pizza and pasta, tomorrow we will try and find some seafood or black risotto. Maybe on our day trip to Cavtat?

Well after a full day in Dubrovnik, I can still say I love it here, it really is one of my favourite places, but it has changed due to mass tourism, which is sad, but I guess, in a way, I am part of that. Although the place remains the same, it's the feeling of it not being as real anymore, for example, last time there were no gold statue buskers or people dressed as pirates with parrots on there shoulder. I guess the locals are just trying to make money from the large tour groups, but it now seems the large tour groups aren't really getting to experience the city the way it really is. I hope that makes sense!

Anyway folks, that's enough from me, enjoy your day :-)

  1. Great synopsis of a magic city. Perhaps we may go there on a cruise one day (with our Zimmer frame)
