A trip to Peles Castle

For our last full day in Brasov, we took a day trip to Peles castle. Peles castle is in Sinaia, about a 1hr train trip from Brasov.

After breakfast, we caught the local bus to the train station and bought our return tickets to Sinaia. Once again, despite speaking little English, the lady in the ticket booth was so helpful and we had no difficulties buying our tickets. Fi ding the platform however was a little more difficult, so I went back and asked the ticket lady and she told us platform 3, thankfully this was correct.

The train was a little late, around 20 minutes, it was an overnight train from Budapest, so I guess it is understandable. It took over an hour to get to Sinaia, we went along so slowly! Which was sort of frustrating given I forgot to bing my headphones, an American family were sitting near us and the small child kept saying how bored he was and asking if they were there yet! So annoying!

Finally we did arrive at around 12:15. Now as you can imagine, they aren't going to build the castle on nice flat ground? No, right up a hill we had to go and I think we chose the most hilliest path. It was quite warm and about a 2.5km walk, it took us about 1/2 an hour and we finally made it to the castle. Thankfully we found a small shop on the way so we could have some water. Also very glad I'd chosen to wear shorts and sandals!

There is actually two castles on the hill, a smaller one called Pelisor, which we saw first. It was very cute and sort of Tudor style. From there we walked around to the main castle. It is very impressive, extremely ornate and surrounded by pretty gardens filled with statues and fountains. Although it is a castle, we found that we would describe it more as a palace, but none the less, we still we really like it and took loads of photos!

As we had booked a return train and our other train was late, we really only had just over an hour to wander the grounds, this was fine as we really did not need to go into the castle, but there were guided tours if this is something we had of wanted to do or had more time.

So after getting our castle fix for the day, we headed back down to the main town, which was very pretty itself, to make our way back to the station. We went to the supermarket to buy some fruit and yoghurt for lunch, I also bought a little treat for us, a chocolate bar.

Whilst waiting to board the train, we were sitting, finishing our yoghurt, when a gypsy girl came over and started talking to us. I have no idea what she was saying, but I am guessing she was demanding to be given our chocolate bar as I noticed she was looking at it in the bag on the seat. I put it in my hand bag, and she went away. It's amazing how much front they have, but also very sad that they have to beg for food.

We arrived back to Brasov at 3:45 and then caught the local bus back into town, a short stroll and we were back at the hotel, time to get ready for beer o'clock!

We wine to one of the cafes that line the Main Street and had some beer, then moved onto an Irish pub where I had a small bottle of wine and Pete enjoyed some German beer.

For dinner, we decided to go to the same restaurant as last night as we had enjoyed it so much. Tonight I had cabbage rolls and Pete had the same dish as the night before. All very yummy and washed down with 2 glasses of wine. We again thoroughly enjoyed watching the sun set on Brasov's main square. It's very pretty.

On the way back to the hotel we had another ice cream, a small habit we have developed here. But the. Feeling still a bit peckish we stopped at another cafe for a piece of cake! Yummy! We'd walked a long way today, so a few extras will not hurt :-)

Tomorrow we leave Brasov for Sighisoara, we have really enjoyed Brasov and the day trip options that are available.

Until then people, enjoy your weekends and stay safe :-)
