We woke to lovely blue skies and the promise of a beautiful day, and I have to say, Munich did not dissapoint!
The day started with coffee at a lovely little cafe around the corner from our hotel, very much like a cafe in Melbourne, it was so nice sitting in the sun enjoying a decent coffee! Perfect kick start to the day.
From our coffee stop we walked down to Marienplatz, the centre of Munich, we spent a bit of time taking photos and grabbed ourself a pastry to eat as we'd not had breakfast. We saw the glockenspiel in action along with the hoardes of other tourists trying to catch the action.
After watching the glockenspiel we climbed the tower of St Peters church for some wonderful views ver the city, it is such a good view and not too hard to climb. From the church we took a well worn path towards the English gardens, we've walked this way dozens of times over the years in our many visits to Munich.
Thought the parks we walked enjoying the sun and listening to buskers play the cello and violin, it was simply beautiful. We got to the English gardens an enjoyed watching people play with their dogs and feed the ducks.
We made it to what is known at the Chinesischer Turn, a small section of the gardens that is an outdoor beer garden with heaps of tables and great choices for food. At first we decided just to have a beer, and we enjoyed one before the smell of other people's lunches and the sight of German food because too much to bear, we just had to buy lunch! It was nearing 1:30 by this stage and we'd done lots of walking, so it's no wonder we could not resist. So we bought another beer and a nice little array of German food. We sat in the sun having simply the most lovely time, listening to the oompah band and enjoying the festivities around us.
Feeling completely satisfied we decided it was time to take a walk back to the city for a spot of shopping, Pete was keen to check out a football shop and bought himself a really nice football jersey from the 1860 Munich store.
After shopping it was time for a little rest, we'd walked a long way and we're feeling a little pooped!
At around 6:30 the call of beer was getting too much for Pete so we headed back out for dinner and drinks. I had reached my fill of beer so settled on a wine and Pete had a couple of beers.
For dinner we also decided we'd had our fill of German food for the day, so ended up deciding on a bit of Thai for dinner, probably not the wisest choice as it was not super tasty, but we asked for some extra sauces and that seemed to give it a bit more flavour.
With dinner finished you'd think we'd be satisfied but we both felt like a sweet treat, after all we are on holidays, so we went in search of ice cream. It had just gone 9pm, so you'd think this would not be an issue in a big city, but alas, everything appeared to be closed. We were just about to give up all hope when we remembered there is a service station right near our hotel, sand yes, they sold ice cream, we both had a magnum which filled the spot.
Today Munich turned on the charm and we really had a superb day. Yesterday I was a little concerned how much we would enjoy it here, but it lived up to expectations and we had a fantastic day.
Tomorrow we head to Neuschwanstein castle which we are both really looking forward to as we have not been here before. There may be a spot of rain, but fingers crossed it does not hamper our viewing of the castle!
Stay tuned for the final days of the blog, we are getting close to the last chapter of the trip!
Enjoy your weekend folks xx
