Sighisoara, right out of a fairytale

Slept so well in our lovely hotel room, it is so dark, I had to use my iPhone to guide myself to the loo!  Breakfast is included in the hotel cost here and it is a buffet so we ate big and enjoyed sitting in the restaurant looking our across at the park and the cute buildings of Sighisoara.

We headed out at around 10am and managed to see a fair bit of the old town before the big tour groups arrived. Sighisoara seems to be quite popular, and I was surprised to see a lot more tourists here than in Brasov, but I guess Brasov is more of a centre to stay to do day trips, where as here, the town itself is what you are coming to see.

And boy, is it pretty. Every house is a different colour, windows are adorned with flower boxes and pretty wooden shutters, the roof tops are all old terracotta tiles covered with moss and lichen that looks like it's been there for hundreds of years. The old town itself has city walls, you can't walk on them, but we followed a path beside them using a map and stopping at each of the towers to read about the history of each tower.

We enjoyed ourselves immensely wandering among the small cobblestones alleyways and streets. We  made our way up to the church yard and took a peek in the cemetery, whilst many of the graves were new, it still had a real feeling of being an ancient graveyard, I'm sure they try to make the headstones look really old.

It was staring to get a little busier with tour groups by this stage and we had taken so many photos, we decided to stop for a beer before grabbing some lunch from the supermarket, just a small picnic today, no need for much after a big breakfast and knowing dinner was going to be a feast.

After our late lunch, it was time to take a bit more of a look around and purchase some souvenirs. There are some lovely things here, I got myself a hand painted magnet, it will be a nice reminder of this pretty place.

Tonight for dinner we decided to go back to the same restaurant as last night, it had been so good. We sat out the front under an umbrella for some pre-dinner wine and soon enough, it started to pour with rain. Thunder and lightning rolled through, so we made a quick dash inside to finish our wine before ordering.

Tonight I had a dish which was sort of like a meat loaf in a tasty tomato sauce with sour cream, Pete chose the same and we shared some polenta and grilled vegetables. Another super tasty meal, followed by some more wine. In total it cost $25, amazing, especially when you consider we drank 1 little of wine between us!

Tomorrow we head off to Sibiu, another small Romanian town, although slightly bigger than Sighisoara. This is the last place we will visit in Romania before heading onto Vienna on Tuesday night when we get to travel by deluxe sleeper carriage - yay!

So, stay tuned folks, we've got plenty more adventures coming your way. Hope you're all enjoying your Monday :-)
